# Vibrant Identity

Language, faith, and living traditions.

Assyrian identity is ethnic, not a denomination and not a modern nation-state. It is carried in Neo-Aramaic, in Eastern Christian churches, in family life, in food, music, dance, and in the new year festival Kha b-Nisan (Akitu).

The language is endangered in some communities and actively taught in others. Churches remain a primary institution of diaspora life. None of that makes Assyrians "a religion" - they are a people who kept a faith.
